I instead dedicated myself to a career in the Police force. I enjoyed many aspects of the job, especially being able to work in the Police Rescue Squad. Being a part of the PRS was very challenging and rewarding, and I am proud of a lot of the good work I was able to be a part of, and grateful for the opportunity to to work alongside some of the best people you could ever wish to meet. Unfortunately after 10 years in the force and at 36 years of age, I was burned out and found myself unable to continue. When that happened I quickly realised that I would not forgive myself if I reached old age ignoring my passion for making beautiful, practical designs and art.
I have since quickly immersed myself in knifemaking, being heavily inspired by the work of Kyle Royer, Don Nguen, and Rodrigo Sfreddo among many others. Luckily for me Australia has a thriving knifemaking scene and over the last 20 months I have made just over 80 knives of all descriptions, and have had numerous opportunities to learn the art and break bread with fellow knifemakers all of whom have been incredibly generous with their time and knowledge. Although my feeling that making a living as an artist is a challenge turned out to be correct, I have never felt more invigorated by work. I am always looking forward to the next build.
My first knife show was the 2023 Sydney Knife Show where I managed to snag “Best New Maker”, that was a really special day for me and really cemented my determination to absolutely try my best. Can't wait for the next one.
